How to Complete the Equipment Inspection

  1. Identify the machine. Record the equipment ID, make, model, hour meter, operator, project, and inspection date before beginning the check.
  2. Walk around the equipment. Look for leaks, damaged tires or tracks, broken lights, loose hardware, cracked components, damaged guards, worn cutting edges, and other visible defects.
  3. Check fluid-related conditions. Review visible fluid levels and leakage conditions in accordance with the contractor's and manufacturer's procedures.
  4. Inspect the attachment. Check buckets, blades, rippers, couplers, pins, teeth, cutting edges, cylinders, hoses, and attachment-retention components.
  5. Check operator safety items. Verify seat belts, alarms, lights, mirrors, cameras, handrails, access steps, and other applicable safety equipment.
  6. Inspect the cab and controls. Check warning lights, gauges, controls, visibility, wipers, glass, doors, and operator seating.
  7. Perform the approved operational check. Where appropriate, document steering, travel, brakes, hydraulics, alarms, or other basic functions according to company and manufacturer procedures.
  8. Record every defect clearly. Identify the location and condition instead of using vague entries such as “needs repair.”
  9. Assign follow-up. Record whether the item can be monitored, needs maintenance, requires immediate repair, or results in the unit being removed from service under the contractor's process.
