Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, and workers experiencing heat stress may not recognize their own symptoms. The buddy system provides an additional layer of protection by pairing workers to monitor each other for early signs of heat-related illness. Prompt recognition and action can prevent heat exhaustion from progressing to the life-threatening condition of heat stroke.

This toolbox talk reviews how the buddy system helps protect workers during hot weather and physically demanding tasks.

Why This Matters

  • Workers may not recognize their own symptoms of heat stress.
  • Buddies can identify early warning signs before a condition worsens.
  • Prompt action helps prevent serious heat-related illnesses.
  • Regular communication improves worker safety and accountability.
  • The buddy system is especially valuable for new or acclimatizing workers.

Common Hazards

  • Working alone in hot environments.
  • Failing to recognize early symptoms of heat stress.
  • High temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Heavy physical workloads or extended work periods.
  • Dehydration caused by inadequate fluid intake.
  • PPE reducing the body's ability to dissipate heat.
  • Poor communication between workers.
  • Delaying medical attention when symptoms appear.

Safety Checklist

Before Work Begins

  • Assign buddy pairs before starting work in hot conditions.
  • Review the signs and symptoms of heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
  • Identify hydration stations, cooling areas, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ensure all workers understand how to summon assistance if needed.
  • Provide additional monitoring for new workers and those returning after time away from hot work.
  • Discuss scheduled hydration and cooling breaks during the pre-job briefing.

During Work

  • Check on your buddy regularly throughout the shift.
  • Watch for signs such as heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, nausea, unusual fatigue, confusion, or changes in behavior.
  • Encourage your buddy to drink water regularly and take scheduled cooling breaks.
  • Move anyone showing signs of heat stress to a shaded or cooled area immediately.
  • Notify a supervisor promptly if heat-related symptoms develop.
  • Seek emergency medical assistance immediately if a worker becomes confused, loses consciousness, has a seizure, or shows signs of heat stroke.

Crew Talking Points

  • Who is your assigned buddy today?
  • What symptoms should you watch for in yourself and your buddy?
  • Where are the hydration stations and cooling areas located?
  • How will emergency assistance be requested if someone becomes ill?
  • Who requires additional monitoring because they are new or acclimatizing?
  • Speak up immediately if you notice your buddy showing signs of heat stress or acting differently than normal.

Stop Work If

  • A worker shows signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
  • Your buddy becomes confused, disoriented, or unresponsive.
  • Hydration or cooling resources are unavailable.
  • Heat conditions become too severe for safe work without additional controls.
  • You lose contact with your assigned buddy during hazardous heat exposure.
  • You or your buddy are unable to safely continue working because of heat-related symptoms.

Final Reminder

Heat stress is easier to prevent when workers look out for one another. Stay with your buddy, communicate regularly, encourage hydration and cooling breaks, and act immediately if you notice signs of heat-related illness. A quick response can save a life.
