Ladders are used on almost every jobsite, but improper use can quickly lead to serious injuries. Falls from ladders are one of the most common causes of jobsite accidents.

This toolbox talk focuses on proper ladder selection, setup, and safe use to prevent falls and injuries.

Why This Matters

  • Ladder-related falls can result in serious injury or fatality
  • Improper setup is a leading cause of ladder accidents
  • Using the wrong ladder for the job increases risk
  • Most ladder incidents are preventable with proper use

Common Hazards

  • Using the wrong type or size ladder
  • Setting ladders on uneven or unstable ground
  • Standing on top rungs or steps
  • Overreaching while working
  • Damaged or defective ladders
  • Improper ladder angle or positioning

Safety Checklist

  • Select the right ladder for the task
  • Inspect ladders before each use
  • Set ladders on stable, level ground
  • Maintain the proper angle (4:1 ratio for extension ladders)
  • Secure ladders at the top and/or bottom when possible
  • Maintain three points of contact when climbing
  • Keep your body centered between side rails
  • Do not stand on the top rung or step
  • Carry tools using a belt or hoist, not in your hands
  • Remove damaged ladders from service immediately

Crew Talking Points

  • Are we using the correct ladder for the job?
  • Is the ladder set up on stable ground?
  • Are there any damaged ladders on site?
  • Are we maintaining proper positioning while working?
  • What should you do if a ladder feels unsafe?

Stop Work If

  • The ladder is damaged or defective
  • The ladder is set on unstable or uneven ground
  • Proper ladder angle or positioning cannot be achieved
  • Workers are standing on top rungs
  • Conditions make ladder use unsafe (weather, surface, etc.)

Final Reminder

Take the time to set up your ladder properly. A few extra seconds can prevent a serious fall and keep you safe.
